Due to our open borders, Halfmoon Conures among other birds are illegally being smuggled in. They are being sold really cheap on the bird market to move them fast. Anyone who sells Halfmoons real cheap and not banded are most likely smuggled. The smuggled birds are sick and highly stressed. They are thrown fruits that spoil and seed. They are shoved in a small wire cage with tons of others, jammed packed, to get as many in as they can in 1 cage.
These birds being smuggled in are full of diseases and I am hearing more stories of birds dropping dead after purchase. The way to prevent this is buying only closed banded babies (leg bands) . The babies being smuggled in are older and have some feathers or all feathered out. Closed leg bands can only be placed on the birds at a few weeks old. The smuggled babies are too sensitive to smuggle in that young due to they need to be hand fed often and on heat.
All our Halfmoon babies are closed banded at several weeks old. The parents are domestically raised which means they were born and raised in the United States. We also have pictures of our babies in the nest after hatch. Many people don't want to spend $600 on a Halfmoon if they can get one for $250. You get what you pay for. What will happen when buy one of these smuggled birds is you will have your house infected with these diseases and will infect any other birds you have. Your current bird can die at any time. You can also run the risk of your bird being confiscated if it was smuggled in. So if you get one of our babies, please.... leave the leg bands on! Do not have them removed.
